Edith Payers künstlerische Praxis umfasst ein buntes Gemisch an Techniken und eine große Bandbreite an Arbeitsweisen: Sie betreibt zahlreiche Fundstück- und Bildersammlungen, die in pseudomuseale Rauminstallationen und wissenschaftlich inszenierte Objektgruppen einfließen. Daneben entwickelt sie partizipative Ausstellungsprojekte, in denen soziale Normen und gesellschaftliche Regulierungen thematisiert werden. Darüber hinausfertigt sie textile Arbeiten und Werkgruppen an und zeichnet schwarzhumorige Künstlerinnenbücher.
Ihre Praxis durchzieht ein tiefer Weltschmerz, dem sie mit tiefgreifendem Humor und radikaler Hoffnung begegnet. Ihr Blick reicht dabei weit über das menschzentrierte Weltbild hinaus und bezieht nicht nur andere lebende Spezies, sondern auch verschiedene Akteur:innen der Dingwelt mit ein. Zwischen Archiv und Alltagskultur, Ironie und Ernst sucht sie nach Momenten, die Perspektiven verschieben und den gesellschaftlichen Kompass neu justieren – als Einladung, gemeinsam mutig, kritisch und humorvoll in die Zukunft zu blicken.
Edith Payer (*1975) studierte an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien und an der Kuvataideakatemia Helsinki, Finnland. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Artist Residencies, welche sie bisher nach Tbilisi, Rabat, Stockholm, Belgrad, Havanna, Paris, London, Paliano, Shanghai, Šmartno, Karelien und Athen führten. Seit 2025 befinden sich ihre Arbeiten in der Sammlung des mumuk, Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, frühere Ankäufe gab es bereits durch die Artothek des Bundes, die Sammlung der Stadt Wien und das Land Burgenland. Die gebürtige Kärntnerin lebt und arbeitet in Wien und im Burgenland.
Edith Payer’s artistic practice encompasses a vibrant mix of techniques and a wide range of working methods. She maintains numerous collections of found objects and images that flow into pseudo-museological spatial installations and scientifically staged groups of objects. Alongside this, she develops participatory exhibition projects that address social norms and societal regulations. She also produces textile works and series, and draws darkly humorous artists’ books.
Her practice is permeated by a profound sense of world-weariness, which she confronts with deep-reaching humor and radical hope. Her perspective extends far beyond an anthropocentric worldview, incorporating not only other living species but also various actors from the world of things. Situated between archive and everyday culture, irony and seriousness, she searches for moments that shift perspectives and recalibrate the social compass—as an invitation to look boldly, critically, and humorously toward the future together.
