Maria Legat malt heftige Bilder. Wenn Maria Legat sich „Und zur Lage der Welt“ den Kopf zerbricht, dann sieht das zwar feingliedrig aus, die Farben sind es nicht die brüllen. Aber es reißt einem den Boden unter den Füßen weg. „Ich sehe die Welt in einem schrecklichen Zustand“ hat sie einmal in einem Interview gesagt. Und wir sehen es mit ihr. Kein Wunder, dass es Betrachter*innen die kleinen, feinen Härchen auf den Unterarmen aufstellt. Mit dem berühmten Kampf gegen Windmühlen vergleicht Maria Legat ihr Leben am Land im konservativen Umfeld. Wenn man ihre Bilder anschaut, sieht man: Sie ist auch selbst die Windmühle. So ist das mit den Gleichzeitigkeiten im Leben. „Ich glaube, dass in der Kunst viel Mut und Energie für Revolution ist“, sagt Legat.

Maria Legat, geboren 1980 in Kärnten, besuchte die Ortweinschule für Kunst & Design in Graz und studierte an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien bei Ashley Hans Scheirl »Kontextuelle Malerei« sowie bei Daniel Richter den »Erweiterter malerischen Raum«. In ihren großformatigen Malereien auf ungrundiertem Leinen sie stellt sich eigensinnig den Komplexitäten unserer Zeit.
Maria Legat stellte unter Anderem im Künstlerhaus Graz, in der Kunsthalle Wien, im Kunsthaus Mürz und in der Salzburger Institution 5020 sowie mit der GALERIE3 in zahlreichen Kunstmessen aus. 2018 schuf sie für den Salzburger Kunstverein eine 10 Meter lange Arbeit in situ. 2019 lud die Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien sie zu einer Gegenüberstellung mit Hieronymus Bosch ein. Zur vielbeachteten Ausstellung > Bosch & Legat, Maria Legat: Und zur Lage der Welt < erschien ein gleichnamiger Katalog. Für ihr Diplom erhielt Maria Legat den Preis der Gesellschaft der Freunde der Künste. 2019 wurde sie mit dem Förderpreis des Landes Kärnten für Bildende Kunst und dem renommierten Anerkennungspreis STRABAG ART Award International ausgezeichnet. 2022 erhält sie den Würdigungspreis des Landes Niederösterreich und nimmt an einer Ausstellung des Wiener Beldvedere teil. Im Herbst 2025 waren große Arbeiten von ihr im Grazer Bruseum zu sehen – eine museale Einzelausstellung dort folgt noch 2026. Die GALERIE3 zeigte Legat zuletzt im Sommer 2025 in Form einer großen Einzelausstellung – WIDER UND, sowie auf der viennacontemporary 2025 und als Einzelpräsentation auf der SPARK Art Fair 2024. Aktuell ist sie außerdem Teil der Ausstellung ANIMALIA in der Heidi Horten Collection (Wien), sowie der Ausstellung Im erweiterten Raum; Eine Kooperation von STRABAG ART und Künstlerhaus Vereinigung (Wien).
Arbeiten von Maria Legat sind in der Sammlung der La Fondation Blan (BE), der Landeshauptstadt Graz, des Universalmuseum Joanneum (Neue Galerie Graz), in der Sammlung der BKS Bank, des Museums für Moderne Kunst Kärnten – MMKK, in der Sammlung des Landes Niederösterreich, der STRABAG Art Collection und zahlreichen privaten Kunstsammlungen vertreten.
Maria Legat paints intense images. When she racks her brain over “About the State of the World,” the result may appear delicate, and the colors are not ones that shout — but it pulls the ground out from under your feet. “I see the world in a terrible state,” she once said in an interview. And we see it with her. It’s no wonder that viewers get goosebumps on their forearms. Maria Legat compares her life in the countryside, within a conservative environment, to the famous fight against windmills. Looking at her paintings, you realize: she herself is also the windmill. That’s how simultaneities in life work. “I believe that in art there is a great deal of courage and energy for revolution,” says Legat.

Maria Legat, born in 1980 in Carinthia, attended the Ortwein School of Art & Design in Graz and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Ashley Hans Scheirl in “Contextual Painting” and with Daniel Richter in “Expanded Painterly Space.” In her large-format paintings on unprimed linen, she confronts the complexities of our time with a distinct sense of independence.
Maria Legat has exhibited, among other venues, at Künstlerhaus Graz, Kunsthalle Wien, Kunsthaus Mürz, and the Salzburg institution 5020, as well as at numerous art fairs with GALERIE3. In 2018, she created a 10-meter-long site-specific work for the Salzburger Kunstverein. In 2019, the Painting Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna invited her to a juxtaposition with Hieronymus Bosch. The widely acclaimed exhibition „Bosch & Legat, Maria Legat: About the State of the World“ was accompanied by a catalog of the same name. For her diploma, Maria Legat received the Prize of the Society of Friends of the Arts. In 2019, she was awarded the Advancement Prize of the State of Carinthia for Fine Arts and the prestigious Recognition Award of the STRABAG ART Award International. In 2022, she received the Merit Award of the State of Lower Austria and took part in an exhibition at the Belvedere in Vienna. In autumn 2025, major works by her were shown at the Bruseum in Graz — a museum solo exhibition there will follow in 2026. Most recently, GALERIE3 presented Legat in summer 2025 with a major solo exhibition titled „WIDER UND“, as well as at viennacontemporary 2025 and in a solo presentation at SPARK Art Fair 2024. She is currently also part of the exhibition „ANIMALIA“ at the Heidi Horten Collection (Vienna), as well as „Im erweiterten Raum, a cooperation between STRABAG ART and Künstlerhaus Vereinigung“ (Vienna).
